The Great Depression was a period of time in the 1930's that experienced an economic depression, meaning that millions of people lost their jobs, the unemployment rate grew tremendously, banks were failing, and many people were struggling to find food because they didn't have any money to live anymore. Poverty was very high during this time. The Great Depression was caused by the stock market crash in 1929.

People were willing to travel many miles to find work because it was very difficult for people to find jobs in their immediate towns.
