What order is used to organize most indexs?

Most indexes use alphabetical order so that whatever the first name of something like "Reid" is or the topic of something lithe ke "estate" is used to place the appropriate information for easy retrieval. If the file or index was helter skelter rather than abcdefg etc it would be much more difficult to find.
