I believe the correct answer is the first option: Love can be difficult.

In these lines from William Shakespeare’s "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" Lysander tries to soothe Hermia when she despairs about the difficulties facing their love because her father, Egeus, has forbidden them to marry. He tells her that they have to endure difficulties, as many did in tales, to reach romantic bliss.
