How did the townspeople react to the "Gold Discovered!" cry? (The Donner Party)

They believed there was gold and started making plans to acquire the goods necessary to join the gold rush.

They closed their shops immediately, packed up their stores and houses, and chased after the promise of gold.

They closed their shops so that the numerous 'gold rush' travelers passing through their town would not take supplies from the regular citizens.

They didn't believe the tales and decided to wait until more individuals came with reports before they would act.
