An adverb modifies an adjective, verb, or another adverb, and usually ends in - ly. They answer questions such as when, where, why, and how.

The adverbs in you sentence are "quickly" and "frantically."

"Quickly" is modifying "ran" because you can ask yourself: How is the dog running? He is running quickly.

"Frantically" is modifying the verb "trying" because you can ask yourself: How is the squirrel trying to do what he's trying to do?"
