Both these literary works have a theme of "belonging" in a sense that it is interpreted in a different way. In the poem "The Broken Chain", the author describes a death in the family that broke the chain or the wholeness of their togetherness. The emotion of it described the grieved that they had been through, but in the end they know that they are still linked together in some way. For the short story, "Fish Cheeks", it describes the cultural appreciation of one's nationality wherein the chinese girl is embarrassed in showing her true culture to her crush. There had been a series of mishaps during the dinner but years after that event, she appreciated it more than ever.
