Some important themes in "Garden of My Childhood" are victimization and individualism.

The theme of victimization is present throughout the story. The first way in which it is presented is that the members of the family are victimized by the Korean War, as it has displaced them and taken their father from them. The second way in which victimization is present in the story is through the treatment of the family in their new village. The narrator discusses the negative stereotypes their neighbors have of their family, as well as the bullying brought upon by the students in the schoolyard. Their refugee status causes them to be victims of these wrongful views of others.

The theme of individualism is mostly presented through the narrator. In both her village and her family, she does not let her situation define her. She finds pleasure in things such as going to the candy store, and is very independent, as is shown in her trips to both the candy store and the well.
