Langston Hughes's poetry was influenced by the rhythms of jazz artists such as Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. Search the Internet to hear some of their music. Then, using a theme or subject of importance to you, write a poem in your journal that mimics the rhythm of the music.

    Seeing your lips, so soft in the pale moonlight.

    Seeing your eyes, they make melt without putting up a fight.

    Your hair, the way it falls down on your shoulders, just above that satin black dress of yours.

    Endless possibilities, open doors.

    Skin, like the velvet petals of a rose.

    What makes me crazy about you, no one knows.

    All I know is, I'm yours even if it's only for the night.

    Right now, you're never leaving my sight.

    Hope this is good enough. I'm just a high school senior.
