Why do most translators avoid referring to Gregor as a cockroach? A.

    That is because there is the idea that the reader should be just as confused as Gregor is so if it's clearly a cockroach we can see that and understand it and it has a connotation in our minds. If he's just described as vermin, then we don't know what kind of vermin and there's a shroud of mystery.
