Which part of a sentence is most similar to the character in a story?

There are multiple parts of a sentence so we can't just give on straight answer. But we know the character is a noun, and the roles of a noun in a sentence most likely referring to the character are the subject (the girl) or the indirect object (to/for the girl) of the sentence.
