This is a part in my biography that I am writing and I would like to know if the punctuation is correct.

"He had taught Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk when he was a child, and remained a lifelong beneficiary of Norfolk's sponsorship."

Someone told me it should be like this

"He had taught Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, when he was a child and remained a lifelong beneficiary of Norfolk's sponsorship."

Which one is more accurate?
