The book is The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. The main character, Gregor Samsa, wakes up to discover he has turned into a giant insect and his transformation is never explained. All the members of the Samsa family treat the event as a random occurrence. They combine to give a distorted sense of reality.

The story reveals that Gregor has a feeling of estrangement prior to his transformation and how he felt emotionally distant from his family. T he alienation caused by Gregor’s metamorphosis as an extension of the alienation he already felt as a person is what makes the situation very real.
