In the death of arthur when arthur breaks the chivalric code and attacks mordred out of anger and a thirst for vengeance he is

betrayed by that anger and vengeance, as Mordred is able to stab Arthur in the head with his sword before dying. It is not said whether or not Arthur dies from the injury, but it is suggested that the wound is mortal. While lying wounded, he gives orders for Excalibur to be thrown back into the lake. He then is placed on a barge and sent back to Avalon.
