Early settlers to North America had an attitude of "Manifest Destiny." Manifest Destiny is the belief that Americans were destined to occupy the entire continent. They believed it was the right of the American people to move West. As a result, America now stretches "from sea to shining sea" and actually occupies most of the continent.
