Japan was mostly isolated because it is an island that's far away and you would have to specifically be looking for it to find it. China was isolated because it's so far away and people who want to come to it have to travel a lot, either by sea or by land and it was often not worth it unless you were a big merchant or something. Mostly the differences are philosophical about their approach to life and behavior towards others.
