Calculate and compare the amount of energy retrieved by the ocean and by the atmosphere. Assume that the radius of the area is 1 m, and the density of seawater is 1028 kg m-3 and of air is 1.29 kg m-3. Also, assume that the mean flow in the atmosphere is 10 m s-1 whereas that of the ocean is 1 m s-1.

    for atmosphere K. E. = 0.5 * 1.29 * 10²

    for atmosphere K. E. = 64.5 J

    so we can say atmosphere is moving faster

    and amount of energy is significantly less than that is possessed by ocean of same volume

    we know that here kinetic energy is express as

    K. E. = 0.5 * m * v²

    here m is mass and v is velocity

    but we take m = dv and where d is density and v is volume

    so

    K. E. = 0.5 * dv * v² ... 1

    and here we know side is 1 m

    so volume will be = 1 m³

    and dv is given = 1028 for ocean and 1.29 for atmosphere

    so from equation 1

    for ocean K. E. = 0.5 * 1028 * 1²

    for ocean K. E. = 514 J

    and

    for atmosphere K. E. = 0.5 * 1.29 * 10²

    for atmosphere K. E. = 64.5 J

    so we can say atmosphere is moving faster

    and amount of energy is significantly less than that is possessed by ocean of same volume
