According to Parson's theory, illness is a deviance from normal. Because for a functional society health is always necessary. So according to him a person who had fallen ill is in a 'sick role'. A person in a sick role has certain rights and obligations.

The four famous postulates of Parson himself are:

The person is not responsible for falling ill or assuming sick role is not his deliberate doing. The person in sick role is exempted from social duties The sick person must try to get well soon For getting well as soon as possible, the person in sick role must seek and submit to medical care.

Thus from the fourth postulate itself it is clear that the role of medicine in society is to get a person out of a sick role which is a deviant behavior.
