One of the most important roles of the Constitution is to protect our individual freedoms and liberties. This is one of the objectives of the Constitution that the Founding Fathers had in mind when it was developed. As the Constitution is the "supreme law of the land," all citizens (even the President) have to respect the law. This is why a written Constitution is such a good protector.

Staying very close to the original meaning of a freedom or civil liberty is very important, as this ensures that the law is always applied in the same way and that it remains regular through time.
