Why do flat maps distort shapes of land masses?

    Because both the Earth and a globe have curved surfaces, sizes and shapes of countries are not distorted and distances are true to scale ... flat maps distort shapes of landmasses because the earth is a sphere and cannot be made the right size on a flat plane.
