Many Central American migrants are escaping conflict, generalized violence and targeted persecution - not traveling by choice. "An increasing number of individuals are now arriving at the U. S. southwest border because of crime, violence and insecurity in Central America," says Jonathan Hiskey of Vanderbilt University. Other Central Americans flee from home because of gang violence, as well as sexual and domestic abuse.
