    Explanation: The metamorphic rocks such as slate, gneiss, phyllite and schist has distinct layers or bandings on them, that are formed due to the increasing temperature and pressure condition.

    Slate is a fine grained metamorphic rock that undergoes metamorphism and forms phyllite. Phyllite again undergoes metamorphism to form a relatively high grade metamorphic rock known as schist, and schist further changes into a much more higher grade rock commonly known as gneiss.

    Metamorphic rocks such as marble, hornfels and quartzite does not have any foliation.
