Answer: Due to the collision between two plates, the subducting plate causes earthquake due to the sudden release of energy. The earthquakes that are generated at a great depth of about 400-800 km below the earth's crust are known as the deep-focus earthquake as the focus is located deep below the crust.

The earthquakes that are generated at an intermediate depth of about 100-400 km, are considered as the intermediate-focus earthquake.

The earthquakes that occurs at a depth upto 70-100 km are known as the shallow focus earthquake.

The shallow focus earthquakes are more destructive than the deep focus earthquake because of its shorter focal depth and the seismic waves so produced can easily reach the surface with great intensity causing a huge damage.
