When Africans were brought to Brazil, slave owners and the Catholic Church felt the need to convert them to Christianity. They believed that by doing so, it would make the slaves more obedient. The Africans have devised many ways to continue practicing their belief.

    - They concealed their sacred symbols of the deities in figures of Catholic saints

-Many Africans practiced Christianity in public but prayed to their own gods in secret.

    - They held meetings for Candomblé worship in the guise of Catholic gatherings
