Planning:

You can't ever plan for a tornado. You never know when one is going to pop up in your front yard, so you can't plan for it. However, you can plan for what to do if one does happen. By planning an emergency route and a routine specifically for a tornado, this will increase your chance of survival.

Equipping:

Being equipped for a tornado is very important. If a tornado were to knock out your power, electricity, heat, water, etc. then what would you do? You couldn't do anything if you weren't properly equipped, and that is why it is important to always be equipped. Flashlights, batteries, water, paper towels, etc. Always be sure to pack the necessary emergency items needed to survive for a day, or maybe even a week.

Training:

Like I said in step number one, you can plan for what to do if a tornado strikes. Have a routine ready for what you were to do if a tornado were to hit, and practice a training course. By practicing what to do, if one does happen, your brain would recognize this and you would have a chance or surviving. Plan an escape route, what to grab, what not to, who to bring alone, then practice it before hand.

An underground area, such as a basement or storm cellar, provides the best protection from a tornado. If an underground shelter is unavailable, consider the following:

Seek a small interior room or hallway on the lowest floor possible

Stay away from doors, windows, and outside walls

Stay in the center of the room, and avoid corners because they attract debris

Rooms constructed with reinforced concrete, brick or block with no windows and a heavy concrete floor or roof system overhead

Avoid auditoriums, cafeterias and gymnasiums that have flat, wide-span roofs.
