The process for coating metal like iron or steel with a thin zinc layer is known as galvanization. The zinc layer serves to protect the metal from rusting

Since zinc is more reactive than iron, when we galvanize iron with zinc, zinc react with oxygen to form a thin layer of oxide which prevents metal to further corrosion. That thin layer of zinc oxide will protect iron from rusting.
