What are functional regions?

A functional region is an area surrounded by smaller areas. They usually more metropolitan in their settings. These regions transcends local and state boundaries. A functional region is often made up of a city which is surrounded by smaller towns and villages. The city provides the political structure and administration for all the encompassed areas. The smaller areas can supply other materials like agricultural resources to the city area.
