    Seafloor spreading occurs at divergent boundaries of tectonic plates. As the plates move away from each other, magma from the mantle rises up to fill the void. When the magma rises, it cools to form new crust. This continues as the two tectonic plates move away from each other. The boundary is marked by a range of mountain ridges.
