Non-renewable energy sources are considered fossil fuels, because the production of new reserves of coal, oil and natural gas takes hundreds of millions of years. There was a mistake. Biofuels, by comparison, are considered renewables, since maize, soy and other biomass can be cultivated indefinitely.
