Absolute dating gives the approximate age of a rock while relative dating only tells which layer of rock is older or younger in comparison to another rock layer. Relative dating is significant in determining the sequence of geological events on the planet. Absolute dating, on the other hand, can then be used to determine when in the past these events occured.
