The Chernobyl station was situated in Ukraine in the Soviet Union. Ukraine was still part of the Soviet union at the time.

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster took place on April 26 1986 in the settlement of Pripyat about 65 miles north of Kiev in the Ukraine, on the banks of the Pripyat River. Thirty-two people died and dozens more suffered radiation burns in the opening days of the crisis.

Only after Swedish authorities reported the problem did the Soviet union authorities reluctantly admit that an accident had occurred.
