The correct answer is D) The Gulf of Carpentaria which is a body of water bounded on three sides by Australia and to the north by the Arafura Sea. It is a large, shallow sea. To the west of the Gulf of Carpentaria is Arnhem Land, to the east is the Cape York Penninsula and to the south lies the Gulf Country. The first European explorer to have touched the region was Willem Janszoon, who was a Dutch navigator and the first European to see the Australian coast.
