The last time the US used a military draft in order to fill their military was the Vietnam War, which technically ended in 1973. Conscription (being forced into military service via a draft) was common place in American society. This had been used in several different wars including the Korean War, World War II, and World War I.

This ability to draft men for military service is still a power that the American government has. However, now the country tries to rely on voluntary enlistment as much as possible.
