Why did people believe america was destined to expand westward?

    At what time period? Before the Homestead Act people always believed that America should expand from the east coast to the west. Gold in California got a lot of immigrants to move near the west coast. The Homestead Act got people to move west, not near the gold, but in inhabited areas.
