The third party candidate was Teddy Roosevelt and his party was the Progressive Party. The Progressive Party formed after Roosevelt failed to get the Republican nomination for president for the election of 1912. This split caused a huge problem in the Republican party, as many of Roosevelt's supporters ditched the Republican party in order to join the Progressive Party. This was evident as the Republican nominee William Howard Taft only received 8 electoral votes.
