President Lyndon Johnson dispatched more than 22,000 troops to the Dominican Republic in 1965 in an effort to prevent the creation of a communist regime in the Western Hemisphere. Since the assassination of Dominican Republic's dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1961, the country had been plunged into political unrest and power struggles. Johnson was afraid the Dominican Republic would turn into another Cuba since there was a strong belief that Fidel Castro was behind all the violence and unrest in the country.
