The main religious practice that became less common in the Zhou period was burying the living with the dead. The shang dynasty called for separation of state and religion which led to the emergence of philosophies. The particular practice was very horrendeous, whereby people would be buried with their dead, especially wives and servants, in hope that they would continue being together in death.
