3 main causes and factors that contributed to the American Civil War:

Slavery was at the heart of the South's issues. The American South relied on slavery for labor to work their fields and such. Many people in the North viewed slavery as evil and inhumane, they were called abolitionists. The abolitionists wanted to outlaw slavery in America.

Expansion of the United States also led to the Civil War. As the United States expanded Westward, each of the new states added to the country shifted the balance of power between the North and South. The Southern states began to fear that they would lose all of their power to the North, thus losing all of their rights. Each new state became a battleground between the two sides.

Secession is the act of withdrawing formally from membership of a federation or body, especially a political state. After Lincoln was elected in 1860, many Southern states decided that they no longer wanted to be a part of America. They felt that they had every right to leave. Starting with South Carolina, 11 states would eventually leave the U. S. and form a new country called the Confederate States of America. President Lincoln said that they didn't have the right to leave the U. S. and began to send troops in to stop the South from leaving, this beginning the American Civil War.
