Describe how president lincoln's war aims evolved between 1861 and 1863, changing from simply preserving the union to also ending slavery.

    In the beginning, all Lincoln wanted to do was re-unite the nation. Once black people began joining the fighting and making their way to the union lines to gain freedom, Lincoln took notice and decided it was time to permanently abolish slavery.
