How was the American civil war part of a global trend toward more destructive and deadly wars?

    The death toll in just the Civil War is almost equal to the number of Americans who perished in all the other wars America has been involved in from the Revolutionary War to the War in Iraq. This includes Korea, Vietnam, and both World Wars, and puts the extraordinary death toll in perspective.
