At first his teachings were commonly practices by users of LSD which was something Townshend was famous for. This even caused Meher Baba to declare that psychedelic drugs have no real effects on his teachings and that they are not related to spiritualism.

I would say the Mahareshi Mahesh Yogi since I remember he was the main guru at that time in the 60's when I was in my pseudo-hippie mode of thinking and aware of the counter culture of the 60's and oppostion to the conventional thinking of the day.
