The court case Brown v. Board of Education outlawed the previous case known as Plessy v. Ferguson.

Plessy v. Ferguson ruled that the "separate but equal" doctrine was constitutional. This doctrine made racial segregation in schools legal. Later, however, African Americans began to comment on how the educational opportunities were not, in fact, equal.

Brown v. Board of Education challenged this doctrine, and eventually lead to the end of segregation in schools.
