As a major aspect of the "Great Triumvirate" or "Immortal Trio," alongside his partners Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, he was instrumental in defining the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Compromise Tariff of 1833, and the Compromise of 1850 to ease sectional strains.
