The number of the veterans varies but usually stands between 15 000 and 17 000. The number of course wasn't just veterans, but also their families who wanted to support them. They built camps where they stayed during their fight for what they believed was owed to them by the government following their service to the country.

President Hoover ordered the dispersal of the bonus army and didn't want to give them what they wanted. The dispersal was a tragedy because the army used cavalry and weaponry to remove them from the camps, using mostly things like guns and tear gas because they believed that it was a coup and that the marchers wanted to overthrow the government.
