Henry Clay's American System was a multi pronged approach to reinforce American industry and agriculture. The national road was one of the first highways extending to the northwest of the country. This road played a major part in integrating the western regions with the other parts of the country in the early 19th century. The Erie canal was intended to revitalize commerce in the great lakes region by connecting Lake Erie to the Atlantic ocean (passing through the Hudson river in Albany).
