How would the missouri compromise determine if a state added after 1820 would be a free state or a slave state?

    The compromise of 1820 allowed the state of Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state in exchange for Maine entering as a free state. The compromise also stated that any state west of the Mississippi River would enter as a free state.
