On June 30, 1960, The newly independent Republic of the Congo was inaugurated, having its first head of state, Joseph Kasavubu and its premier, Patrice Lumumba. After gaining independence, the Congo immediately struggled by massive economic, political, and social problems. Then the armed forces mutinied, and separatist movements and intertribal conflict threatened to split the country. Following the mutiny and the ousting of its European officers, the Congolese National Army became an undisciplined and uncertain force, with groups of soldiers supporting various political and military leaders.
