At the height of the cold war the driving military concept was to have more weapons than the other country. As such, upon finding out this information the U. S. government would have set in motion the mechanisms to stockpile additional nuclear weapons, what is commonly referred to as an "arms race". The term "arms" is a derivation from the concept military armaments or weapons.
