Why do secessionists place so much emphasis on the growth of antislavery public opinion in the north?

    The antislavery views of the North was causing instability to the slavery institution.

    Several slaves were escaping in droves to the free states of the North, causing the slave-plantation based economy of the South to suffer. The North was also not willing to send back run away slaves back to their owners.
