    The northern Sudanese demanded that the southern Sudanese convert to Islam.

    Northern Islamic leaders ruled Sudan under Islamic law and those living in the South were Christian and animistic faiths. The beginning of Islamic law started a civil war as the South was ready to be independent from Islamic law.
