    Foner has been focused on three major concern, 1. sociologically process of training that made freedom feasible 2. Different manners of freedom 3. Limitations and exhibitions of freedom.

    He outshines at emphasizing the mental or emotional strain of intensifying freedom as a stated rising path, but one of intermittently or sporadically - he regularly reminds us at the inconsistencies and restrictions of any activities towards freedom. He even constantly observes how liberal activists co-opted the language of freedom to proclaim their goals - from opponents to women advocating the extension of suffrage.
